Our modern lives contain many stressors and distractions. It can be hard to maintain a healthy outlook on life and good communication with loved ones. Finding a good balance between work and family is especially challenging in this age of instant access to information. It can be tempting to use our modern media to pack more into our already busy lives or to soothe and distract ourselves. The downside is that these choices lead us to feeling less calm, focused and joyful.
Psychotherapy can be a time when you slow down and re-evaluate your priorities. You can learn skills that will help you sleep better, feel more calm, overcome addictions and strengthen your relationships. For parents, using these skills helps to model healthy behavior for the entire family, giving children positive models of coping.
My approach to therapy is practical and solution-focused. Therapy begins by getting a full picture of the client's history, relationships and current functioning during the intake interview. At that point, a treatment plan is developed that focuses on helping the client reach their own goals. To help clients achieve those goals, I provide support and present ideas from various approaches: cognitive-behavioral, humanistic and narrative. I tend to use a lot of analogies and humor in my work to help clients see a different perspective.
